COVID-19 has taken over all our lives, and during this pandemic, refrigerated truck drivers are providing the essential service of delivery food to grocery stores. It’s been a busy time, and we have all drivers on our mind during this time. Social distancing is key to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus; social distancing means limiting the amount of people you are in contact with,which is proven to lower the risk of catching the virus. So, how can truck drivers practice social distancing while providing their much-needed service? It is possible! There are some key things to avoid, practices that must be done but require safety, and other things that are considered secure.

What Drivers Should Avoid

  • Spending extended periods of time at public access points, including delivery destinations. We have gotten notification from various shippers and receivers regarding changing some of their practices due to the virus. If you are unsure of what specific changes are happening at shippers and receivers, please contact us and we will advise you.
  • Close socialization with other people in places such as gas stations, truck stops, and accommodations. You must stay 2 meters/6 feet away from others.
  • Visiting people (family, friends, etc.) along your route.
  • Crowded rest stops and stores. We have heard that many rest stops have closed their facilities, which although not ideal for drivers needing to use these, it is for everyone’s safety.

When to Exercise Heightened Safety Measures

  • Switching vehicles with other drivers – if you are a driver who shares a truck with others, ask you company what cleaning and disinfecting measures they are following. It is always a good idea to be cleaning and disinfecting all high-touch surfaces inside the truck (steering wheel, dash, windows, driver & passenger seat, etc.) – be sure to be using a recommended cleaning and disinfecting solution. Check the CDC’s Clean & Disinfect page for reliable advice.
  • Loading or unloading cargo – again, many shippers and receivers have adjusted their practices regarding driver’s assistance with loading and unloading cargo – please contact us to review. Remember, if you are not loading or unloading the cargo in your trailer, record “shipper load and count” or “receiver unload and count” on the BOL.

Secure Things Drivers Can Do

  • Spending time in your vehicle, sleeper cab, or accommodations. A great time to catch up on Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime TV, Hulu & YouTube. So many movies and series await!
  • Connect with friends, family, and UWT over the phone or social media. Want to chat? We are here and answering the phones! We have found Zoom and FacTtime to be great resources to check in with our fellow UWT teammates, friends and family. You don’t have to feel lonely!
  • Use your debit/credit card for purchases. Many vendors are only accepting these methods of payment, as cash is high touch and can hold the virus.

Once again, thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to providing an essential service during this time. And remember, if you develop symptoms while working, you should immediately put on protective equipment (mask and gloves) and finish the essential services you are providing, then self-isolate and call 811 (Canada) or your healthcare provider (US).  If at any point during self-monitoring/self-isolation you develop any of the emergency warning signs (difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to arouse, and/or bluish lips or face), get medical attention immediately! Call 911 and let the operator know you have potential COVID-19 symptoms so first responders can also have protective equipment ready.
