LRR tires reduce friction by changes in a tire’s tread depth, tread compound, and casing design parameters. All of these factors contribute one way or another to friction or energy loss.

The Pros of Low Rolling Resistance Truck Tires

Of course, the main pro of low rolling resistance truck tires is the added fuel efficiency. After all, it’s estimated that about 30% of a truck’s fuel economy is lost from friction.

If a truck switches its tires to LRR tires, there’s about a 5-7% savings in fuel economy. Although that doesn’t sound like a lot, it’s a massive saving over time.

For example, let’s say it costs about $45,000 in fuel to operate one truck. A minimal 5% savings will be a whopping $2250.

Since LRR tires often have a lower tread depth, that gives them better traction. Of course, this only applies to smooth tarmac roads.

The lower depth and tread material in LRR tires also make for an incredibly smooth ride.

The Cons of Low Rolling Resistance Truck Tires

One of the major downsides of LRR tires is their reduced grip. Remember, grip is necessary at higher speeds and for cornering.

However, commercial trucks should not be driving fast or taking turns quickly. On top of that, not all LRR tires have a lower grip.

Some LRR tires don’t have changes to the tread depth and only the casing.

Another con of LRR tires is that they must be properly inflated at all times. To get the benefit from low rolling resistance tires, they need to have proper air pressure.

Things to Consider Before Getting Low Rolling Resistance Truck Tires

There’s also the cost of the tires to consider. Although this may seem like a con, the fuel savings can make it worth it.

However, the upfront cost of LRR tires may scare some fleet managers away. If the math works out, LRR tires could be a great way to save money.

Also, there’s a misconception that LRR tires don’t last as long as conventional tires. This may have been true at some point, but the technology has gotten much better over the years.

That means that the lifespan of an LRR tire is about the same as a conventional tire.

There’s no easy answer to this question. There are many different types of LRR tires, and some may be more suitable for your operation than others.

It’s best to see what types of LRR tires exist and try to calculate the costs and savings. Once you do that, you’ll know if the switch is right for your truck or entire fleet.
