Welcome to October – Fall Veggies and Running Update

We are having a nice start to fall up here in the Pacific Northwest, and it looks like it will be a great Thanksgiving weekend for Canada and Columbus Day weekend for the US! So, let’s take a look at the movement and trends of the most popular produce for fall:

• Tomatoes: Harvest is underway in the San Joaquin Valley in California, and remains steady. Demand is still on the slow side, which is keeping prices in a lower range. Each week is bringing colder weather to the Midwest and Eastern States; this means garden tomatoes will be coming to and end, which will increase demand. Florida is just starting up, with fair quality noted at the beginning of their season.
• Squash: Supplies from Mexico have begun to hit the US market, and California is continuing production from the Santa Maria area. Michigan and Georgia have experienced cooler temperatures this week, which has pushed the market prices up a bit, but volumes are not expected to increase significantly.
• Bell Peppers: Many shipping points are experiencing increased harvesting. Cooler temperatures in the West are expected to slow down harvesting in some areas. Demand in the west is slightly exceeding the market. In the East, supplies are remaining good out of Michigan and Georgia is into good volume and the market is remaining steady.
• Potatoes: Movement from Idaho is steady on all sizes and varieties. The Washington market is also steady with volume heavier to larger sizes. The Market in Colorado is steady to lower on all sizes. Washington, Wisconsin, and Minnesota continue to pack new crops with steady production and size availability.
• Carrots: Supplies from California remain good. Sizing is also good and supply is steady due to warm weather.
• Broccoli: Market demand has picked up slightly. All pack sizes are available from all growing regions.

Results – Running for the Cure

This past Sunday, Team UWT had a great time participating in the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s Run for the Cure. It was a great event, with sunny skies and great vibes from the crowd. Over $30 million was raised nationwide for breast cancer research, education, and advocacy.

Average 5km running time for the 10 team members was 29 minutes! Great job team! Some photos from the event:
