Every year at the beginning of June, tens of thousands of commercial vehicles are inspected during the CVSAs Roadcheck event. This year showed the lowest rates for out-of-service violations since the event started back in 1991. Here’s a rundown of the numbers of this year’s event that took place June 2nd to 4th.
- 69,472 truck and bus inspections were completed (5.5% less than last year’s event)
- 44,989 North American Standard Level I inspections were completed (9.4% less than last year’s event), where drivers and vehicles are assessed for violations of federal, state, or provincial safety regulations. Of these Level I inspections, 21.6% of vehicles were found with out-of-service violations (1.4% less than last year’s event).The percentage of drivers under Level 1 Inspections who were placed out of service was 3.6, down 1.2% from last year.
- 777 seatbelt violations were issued.
- Overall Vehicle inspection results:
- Brake violations related to adjustments and systems were the most common violations resulting in a vehicle being placed out-of-service. They accounted for 43% of all out-of-service violations issued (3.2% less than last year’s numbers)
- 82.5% of all vehicles inspected had no out-of- service violations, a 1.2% increase over 2014.
- This year’s special focus was on cargo securement. During the event, inspectors issued 2,439 violations for load securement. Those violations were specifically related to failure to prevent shifting/loss of load, failure to secure truck equipment (tarps, dunnage, doors, tailgates, spare tires), damaged tie downs (unacceptable wear on chain or cuts and tears on web straps), loose tie downs, and insufficient tie downs.
- Overall Driver Inspection Results:
- Hours-of-Service violations were the most common violations resulting in a driver being placed out-of-service. They accounted for 46% of all driver violations (0.5% less than last year’s numbers).
- 95.2% of all drivers had no out-of-service violations, which was the same as in 2014.
